SEAMIC
is involved in regional initiatives that are aimed at
promoting sustainable development of the mineral sector
in Africa. SEAMIC's contribution to regional initiatives
can particularly be considered in terms of capacity
building; promotion of regional-information networks;
development of capacity for the management of mineral
wealth, promotion of small scale mining projects specially
industrial minerals for poverty alleviation in the rural
communities and promotion of mineral resource cluster
development.
Some of the regional
initiatives SEAMIC is actively involved are:
- African
Mining Network (AMN)
- Communities
and Small-Scale Mining (CASM) Africa
- Africen-European Georesources Observation System- (AEGOS)
- African-European Georesources Observation System (AEGOS)
As a continuation to the GIS Africa project objectives, SEAMIC in collaboration with African-European Union (EU) institutions and EU financing is now involved in executing the African European Georesources Observation System (AEGOS) Project that was launched in Cape Town, South Africa on February 9, 2009. - African Mining
Partnership (AMP)
The establishment
of AMP was proposed by UNECA as a tool to facilitate
the implementation of the mining chapter of the
NEPAD. The African Mining Ministers during a meeting,
which was held in Cape Town, South Africa Town in
February 2003, established the Africa Mining Partnership
(AMP). The AMP is intended to achieve sustainable
development through :
-
Strengthening the
contribution of mining to poverty eradication
and sustainable natural resource management;
-
Enhancing international
and regional co-operation to improve access
to reliable, affordable, economically viable,
socially acceptable and environmentally sound
mineral services, as an integral part of poverty
reduction programmes; and
-
Enhancing
the contribution of the industrial sector, in
particular mining, minerals and metals, to the
sustainable development of Africa by supporting
the development of effective and transparent
regulatory and management frameworks and value
addition, fair pricing, broad-based participation,
social and environmental responsibility, in
order to create an attractive and conducive
environment for investment.
Its planned
activities include the establishment of formal and
informal regional networks, including an African
Mining Network, to assist the implementation of
the project's objectives. Other activities will
be concerned with capacity building and policy networking.
SEAMIC
will be an active player in AMP as potential implementing
agency of the AMP projects.
