The
Ceramic unit of Industrial
Minerals Application Section,
using locally available mineral raw materials
produces high quality hand made ceramic
products. The unit concentrates on house
hold items in complete sets such as mugs,
cups, plates, flower vases, candle holders,
and ash trays of different sizes and shapes.
These
house hold items are produced with different
African artistic decorations. The unit is
also capable of producing individual designs
with names, logos and special drawings.

Regional
Geochemical and Geophysical Exploration
Surveys
a GIS based inventory in Eastern
and Southern Africa
The
SEAMIC hosted GEODESA-project
in Dar Es Salaam made available to anyone
interested its inventory on CD-ROM of regional
exploration surveys. This is the result
of a large cataloguing exercise in the region
and it provides an easy reference to existing
geophysical and geochemical exploration
surveys in 13 Eastern and Southern African
countries, without containing the actual
data-sets. The CD-ROM directs the user to
the actual owners of the data. In some cases
the Geo-Information section of SEAMIC has
made arrangements with the government concerned
to make available specific surveys directly
from SEAMIC, on behalf of those governments.
The survey
information for the inventory has been collected
by
-
Extracting information from previous
inventories,
-
Visiting the archives of the national
institutions (Geological Survey Organisations)
involved in the GEODESA-project, and
-
Direct communication
with geo-scientists of those institutions.
The following information is included:
regional geochemical and geophysical
surveys carried out in the past by the
national institutions, the mining industry
and donor organisations. Detailed follow-up
surveys are not included because they
are often small and of less importance
for regional overviews. The geochemical
survey types included are: stream, soil
and rock surveys. The geophysical surveys
types are: airborne magnetic, (gravity),
radiometric, EM as well as ground gravity.
In addition, a GIS index of published
geological map sheets is also provided.
The following
are some examples of thematic maps included
in the inventory:
Different
types of export files for other GIS-packages
(such as ArcInfo) are also included on the
CD-ROM. MapInfo also allows the easy production
of thematic maps on the screen. The user
can for example ask to see surveys by contractor
or by year of acquisition etc.
The
database is avaiable online
for browsing. |
