| The
Mineralogy, Petrology and Gemmological Section of SEAMIC
has many years of experience in the analysis and fundamental
characterisation of minerals and rocks and serving the
mining community locally and internationally.
AREAS OF EXPERTISE
- Mineralogical and petrological
sample preparation and analysis
- Mineralogical evaluation
of industrial minerals, metallic minerals and clays

Gemmology
MINERALOGY AND PETROLOGY
SAMPLE PREPARATION
To obtain meaningful
analytical results, it is important that the sample
preparation to be done properly. It is because of this
that the section provides a wide range of thin section
preparation, including polished blocks and resin impregnation
both for in-house requirement and clients.
EVALUATION OF INDUSTRIAL
MINERALS AND CLAYS
Industrial
minerals are essential for the manufacturing sector
and the infrastructure improvement. The section also
carries out evaluation of industrial minerals including
fieldwork, sampling and laboratory investigations. Laboratory
evaluation involves a wide range of inter-related properties
and must be carried out with the knowledge of the requirement
of the end user.
MINERALOGICAL
AND PETROLOGICAL ANALYSIS
The section has a wide expertise in the mineralogical
and petrological analysis. The section offers integrated
mineralogical and petrological services to clients by
carrying out petrographic and mineralogical evaluations
of sediments, rocks and drill cores utilising transmitted
and reflected optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction
and thermal analysis.
GEMMOLOGY
Founded in
1996, the gemmology unit of SEAMIC has grown to be an
internationally recognised unit servicing gemstone miners,
dealers and buyers in areas of identification, certification,
training, advisory and consultation services.
Gemstone Identification
and Certification
The numerous
gemstones offered in the trade, the discovery of new
gemstones, varieties and occurrences as well as synthetic
and imitation stones require a detailed understanding
through gemmological knowledge of the material available
on the market.
SEAMIC's gemmological unit examines and identifies gemstones
and their numerous imitations and certifies them.
Diamond Grading
SEAMIC's gemmological unit
identifies, distinguishes between diamond and their
simulants as well as carrying out grading and gives
expert opinions.
TRAINING COURSES
The section
undertakes in-house training in mineralogical and petrological
sample preparation and analysis techniques and industrial
mineral assessment for staff and technicians from mineralogical
and petrological departments from different institutions.
The section
also provides short gemmology training courses to mineral
and gemstone miners, dealers and all interested parties.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The section
in collaboration with other sections is carrying out
research and development activities, including evaluation
of raw materials for industrial application.
ADVISORY AND CONSULTATION
SEAMIC's mineralogy
and petrology section provides advisory and consultancy
services to the mining community and proactively promotes
the sector by conducting training programmes.
