40th Years Anniversary
The year 2017 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Centre after it has become a continental institution with the new name AMGC also striving to become the technical arm of the African Union Commission (AUC) for the mineral resources development.
The 40th Anniversary will be celebrated during the Annual Policy Organs meeting of the AMGC which will be held in Dar es Salaam during the last week of May 2017.
Inauguration of Analytical Fingerprinting Laboratory
During the year 2017, AMGC will also mark one of its biggest milestone by becoming the centre for Analytical Fingerprinting for coltan minerals for the Great Lakes Region. Starting from 2014, AMGC established a partnership with the International Conference for Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) through a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding signed between ICGLR, AMGC and BGR (Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources) of Germany. Through this partnership AMGC is hosting the Analytical Fingerprinting (AFP) Laboratory for coltan minerals which was the part of the ICGLR’s programmes of the Regional Initiative for Natural Resources (RINR). The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the fingerprinting purpose with two major equipments, namely Laser-Ablation Induced Coupling Plasma Mass Spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The installation and commissioning of these high tech facilities which is worth of about US$ 2 million is expected to be completed in the first quarter of the 2017. The inauguration of this facility will be coupled with the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the AMGC.
