The Director General of SEAMIC is the Chief Executive of the Centre who leads the overall day to day activities of the Centre. The Director General is selected through a process lead by Executive Secretary of UNECA, from candidates applied for the post through their governments. The post of the Director General is widely advertised in the eastern and southern African sub-region, when it falls vacant. The Governing Council approves the selected candidate for the post by the Executive Secretary of the UNECA. The Director General serves for a maximum period of two terms of four years each.
The Current Director General, Mr. Ketema Tadesse was appointed in May 2006 by the 27th Meeting of the Governing Council of SEAMIC. Mr. Ketema is a Geologist from Ethiopia, and he was the Director General of the Geological Survey of Ethiopia since 1992. Mr. Ketema has also served as the Cheirman of the Board of Directors of SEAMIC from 1998.
The Director General of SEAMIC is assisted by a Management Team, comprising of the heads of Sections of the Centre for all management decisions and review of all the Centre's activities. The Director General also chairs the Human Resources Committee.

Operational Framework

Apart from the directorate and support staff, the Centre comprises of two technical departments namely: Geo-Information Department and Laboratory Services Department.

The following Units also provide support and technical services under direct supervision of the Director General:

  • Quality Management Team
  • Planning, Marketing and Business Development Unit
